Growl: GrowlingLion – Lion inspired growl theme

Lion has been released, and I wanted to make a theme that felt native to the new system, So I created Growling Lion based on the Safari 5.1 downloads window.

You can download it here!

A big thanks to the creater of Mono – Christopher Lobay. I used his theme as the foundation for mine, so this is more of a remix than a completely new theme.

There is a little bug in Growl however, so I couldn’t quite get the animation I wanted. You see if I choose to animate stuff, the shadows goes away, and using css shadows in Growl style simply isn’t a good idea.

UPDATE #1
I have added priorities colouring to version 1.1 – thanks to Christian for making the code

I know a lot of people want’s me to change the font size, however I have chosen not to since I like it this way. You can however do it your self by right clicking the style (in Finder) and choose “Show Package Content”. Afterwards open the default.css (GrowlingLion.growlStyle/Contents/Resources/default.css) and edit the last couple of lines.

  1. I love it! However the font is too small :( I recommend you to look at the style “Brushed” that’s already included in Growl.

  3. And for the two of you who want’s a bigger font size, my suggestion would be to edit it your self. It’s not to be rude, but I really like it the way it is, and the only way, I know off, to have multiple versions of a skin is to make it in Objective-C – which would be a lot of work for me.

    • Sorry I didn’t see your comment before this, i’ve been very buzzy and I somehow missed it – sorry.

      The dismiss button is in fact not editable.

      Two hacks exits to edit it. One has to be done locally and one can be embedded into a theme but doesn’t allow for what you want. You can hack it locally by editing the images in growls content folder, but this would have to be done on every update. You can also overlay a close button within the theme by the help of html and css, however if you do this the button has to be at least the same size and in the same place as the default close button in order to hide it.

  4. How do we edit the font size ourselves, though? I suspect we show package contents and edit “default.css” but I don’t know what line to change.

  5. Love the theme but as others have said, I would also like to see a larger font. I’d be happy to edit myself but I’m not smart enough to figure it out on my own. If anyhow knows though, please let us know! Again, thanks for your hard work

  6. It would be awesome if you could support different priorities in this one. See here: http://quickcalapp.com/goodies/

    @David @Edurado
    I really not that hard to adjust font size.
    Its in ~/Library/Application Support/Growl/Plugins/GrowlingLion.growlStyle/Contents/Resources/default.css

    I chose 10pt and 14pt for line hight

    • You’re awesome! Worked perfectly for me. I changed both these from 8 to 10 and it’s perfect, then reinstalled

      h1 {
      font-size: 10pt;
      overflow: visible;
      }

      p {
      font-size: 10pt;
      color: #878888;
      overflow: visible;
      }

  17. Fantastic! Awesome job. That’s great that Growl thought it good enough to include it in the bundle soon.

    I agree that it’s a little too small for my test. I changed the CSS file to 9pt Segoe UI. Looks just as good!

  18. Thanks for the tip about how to change font sizes in Growl themes. So many of them are way too small, which is such a shame. Nice work on your theme, btw, and thanks for sharing. Cheers!
